Intake Interview

One of our professional staff persons will meet with you for approximately one half to a full hour.

After completing some background forms, you will have a chance to talk about the concerns which brought you into the Counseling Center. At the conclusion of the interview, the staff person will attempt to summarize and then make suggestions about strategies that would be helpful. If therapy seems to be a logical next step -- the counselor may suggest individual or group therapy.

Either approach may be suggested as both have strengths and weaknesses in addressing certain problem areas. Since schedules fill quickly, you may be asked to delay the start of counseling for a while.

Referral Interview

This interview is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing counseling/therapy in the community. Typically it is useful for a person who has been in therapy before and would like to continue with a new therapist in the Binghamton area.

The Counseling Center's role is to obtain enough information about the current concerns to provide an independent judgment of the need for treatment and to make an informed referral to a qualified professional. Although we recommend that you talk to a staff member about a referral, if you simply want names or community agencies, ask for our handouts on community resources.
